Many women feel anxious if they experience bleeding or pain after a smear test. While mild spotting is common, some symptoms may require medical review. This article explains what is normal, when to seek help, and which tests at Marylebone Diagnostic Centre can rule out infection, inflammation or hormonal imbalance.

What Is Normal After a Smear Test?

Mild symptoms for 24–48 hours may include:

  • light pink spotting
  • mild cramping
  • vaginal sensitivity
  • slight discomfort during urination

These occur because the cervix can become irritated during screening.

When Bleeding Is Not Normal

Seek further assessment if you experience:

  • heavy bleeding
  • bleeding lasting more than three days
  • foul-smelling discharge
  • fever
  • pelvic pain
  • bleeding after every sexual encounter

These signs may indicate infection or cervical inflammation.

Possible Causes of Post-Smear Bleeding

  • cervical irritation
  • underlying cervicitis
  • HPV-related inflammation
  • STI or bacterial infection
  • hormonal fluctuations
  • contraceptive effects

MDC can test for these causes.

What If You Also Have Pain?

Mild cramps are normal. However, persistent or sharp pain may indicate:

  • pelvic inflammatory disease
  • untreated STI
  • ovarian cyst complications
  • endometrial irritation

Testing helps identify the cause.

When to See a Doctor Immediately

  • severe abdominal pain
  • fever above 38°C
  • soaking sanitary pads
  • dizziness or fainting

Urgent care may be required.
