This guide explains what the test measures, what the numbers and ratios on the report mean, and where it fits alongside blood testing.
What a hair mineral analysis is
Hair mineral analysis, also known as Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA), is a laboratory test that measures the levels of minerals and selected heavy metals stored in a small sample of hair taken close to the scalp.
Unlike a blood test, which captures what is circulating in your bloodstream at one moment, hair may reflect mineral exposure and storage patterns over roughly the previous three to four months. Hair grows about 1 cm per month, so a sample creates a kind of historical record of certain elements present during that period.
What the test actually shows
A report generally covers two categories.
Essential minerals
Nutrients your body needs for normal function - for example calcium, magnesium, zinc, copper, selenium, iron, chromium, manganese, potassium, and sodium. These play roles in energy production, hormone function, immune health, fertility, bone health, and nervous and muscle function.
Heavy metals
The test may also screen for exposure to selected heavy metals such as mercury, lead, arsenic, cadmium, aluminium, and nickel. The purpose is not to diagnose poisoning, but to flag patterns that may warrant further investigation.
How to read your results
Most reports give you three things, and understanding all three is the key to interpreting the report correctly.
Individual mineral levels - the measured concentration of each mineral.
Reference ranges - the laboratory's comparison ranges, used to show whether a result sits within, above, or below expected limits.
Mineral ratios - relationships between minerals, which some laboratories calculate because the balance between minerals can be as informative as any single value. Commonly reported ratios include:
- Calcium-to-magnesium (Ca/Mg)
- Sodium-to-potassium (Na/K)
- Zinc-to-copper (Zn/Cu)
These ratios are widely used within nutritional and functional medicine to explore broader patterns of mineral balance, rather than to diagnose a specific condition.
Can it detect deficiencies?
This is one of the most common questions - and the honest answer is nuanced. Hair mineral analysis does not directly diagnose a vitamin or mineral deficiency. What it can do is highlight mineral patterns that suggest possible imbalances or altered mineral status. For example, low zinc patterns may be associated with hair-health concerns, and low magnesium patterns may be worth assessing further. This is exactly why the test is most useful alongside blood testing rather than on its own.
Can it detect heavy metals?
Yes. HTMA may identify elevated levels of metals such as lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium, and aluminium. A blood test shows what is circulating right now - for example iron, ferritin, vitamin D, thyroid hormones, testosterone, or inflammatory markers. A hair mineral analysis may give insight into longer-term mineral exposure, storage patterns, selected heavy-metal exposure, and mineral-balance trends. Most clinicians treat the two as complementary: hair for longer-term trends, blood to confirm and expand on current status. Can it help with hair loss?
