Book an evidence-based Iron Assessment first. IV iron is only offered when our doctor considers it clinically appropriate after reviewing your blood results and assessment questionnaire.

What is the MDC Iron Assessment?

Persistent fatigue, low energy, brain fog, hair loss, shortness of breath, dizziness or restless legs can be associated with iron deficiency, but these symptoms may also have other causes. Our assessment is designed to establish whether iron deficiency is present and what the most appropriate next step should be.

Your appointment includes blood collection for an Iron Profile and Full Blood Count (FBC), completion of a structured clinical questionnaire, and review by an MDC doctor. You will then receive a personalised recommendation based on your results, symptoms and medical history.

What is included for £140?

ElementIncluded
Comprehensive Iron ProfileSerum Iron, Ferritin, Transferrin, Transferrin Saturation (TSAT), Total Iron Binding Capacity (TIBC) and Unsaturated Iron Binding Capacity (UIBC).
Full Blood Count (FBC)Includes haemoglobin and red-cell indices used to assess whether iron deficiency has affected blood-cell production or caused anaemia.
Clinical questionnaireSymptoms, medical history, current medicines and supplements, allergies, previous iron treatment, pregnancy or breastfeeding status where relevant, dietary factors and possible causes of iron deficiency.
Doctor-led Clinical ReviewAn MDC doctor reviews the blood results, clinical questionnaire and relevant medical information before making a personalised recommendation.
Treatment planBased on your blood results, symptoms and clinical assessment, your personalised treatment plan may include no treatment, dietary measures, oral iron, further investigation, GP or specialist referral, or IV Iron Therapy when clinically appropriate.

Why both an Iron Profile and an FBC?

The Iron Profile assesses iron stores and iron transport. The FBC shows whether low iron has affected haemoglobin and red-cell production. Reviewing both provides the doctor with a more complete clinical picture than relying on ferritin or serum iron alone.

Who may benefit from an assessment?

  • Persistent tiredness or reduced energy
  • Shortness of breath, dizziness or headaches
  • Hair thinning, brittle nails or restless legs
  • Reduced exercise tolerance or poor concentration
  • Heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Previous iron deficiency or borderline results
  • Vegetarian or vegan diet
  • Pregnancy planning or post-pregnancy concerns
  • Previous difficulty tolerating oral iron

IV Iron Therapy: if recommended

If, following review of your Iron Assessment, the doctor determines that intravenous iron replacement is clinically appropriate, MDC offers IV Iron Therapy using 100 mg Iron Sucrose at £299 per treatment session. The number of sessions is determined individually by the prescribing doctor; it is not a fixed package and may vary according to the patient's iron deficit, blood results, symptoms, medical history and response to treatment.

Understanding the Cost of IV Iron Therapy

IV Iron Therapy is charged per 100 mg treatment session (£299). The number of sessions required is determined individually by the prescribing doctor based on your iron deficiency, blood test results and clinical response. MDC currently provides 100 mg Iron Sucrose per treatment session; this is not a single high-dose 500 mg or 1,000 mg infusion. Additional sessions, where prescribed, are charged separately unless included in a written treatment package.

How treatment is administered

Iron Sucrose is administered through a cannula placed into a vein as an intravenous infusion diluted in 0.9% Sodium Chloride. The treatment is prepared and administered by an appropriately trained healthcare professional in accordance with the doctor's prescription, the current product information, and MDC clinical policy. Patients are monitored before, during, and after treatment as clinically required.

Monitoring your response after a treatment course

Patients who complete a prescribed course of four or more IV Iron Therapy sessions will receive one complimentary Post-Treatment Iron Review. This includes a repeat Iron Profile, Full Blood Count (FBC), and doctor review of the results.

The doctor will determine the appropriate timing of the repeat blood tests after the final treatment. The review is used to assess improvement, decide whether iron stores and haemoglobin have responded as expected, and determine whether any further investigation or treatment is required. Additional IV iron is never automatic.

Complimentary Follow-Up Eligibility
Completion of a doctor-prescribed course of 4 or more IV Iron Therapy sessions; includes repeat Iron Profile, FBC and doctor review.

Safety and possible side effects

IV iron is a prescription-only medical treatment and is not suitable for everyone. As with all prescription medicines, IV Iron Therapy is only recommended where the potential benefits are considered to outweigh the potential risks. Possible effects include headache, nausea, dizziness, flushing, metallic taste, temporary changes in blood pressure, and discomfort or bruising at the cannula site. Leakage outside the vein may cause skin staining. Rarely, serious hypersensitivity reactions may occur. Risks, alternatives and consent will be discussed before treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Results from the previous three months may be considered, but the doctor will decide whether they are sufficiently complete and current.
No. Many patients are advised that IV Iron Therapy is not required. Depending on your assessment, the doctor may recommend dietary advice, oral iron supplementation, further investigations, referral to your GP or specialist, or no treatment at all.
The number is prescribed individually. Some patients may require several 100 mg sessions; others may not require IV iron at all.
One repeat Iron Profile, Full Blood Count (FBC), and doctor review are complimentary after completion of a prescribed course of four or more sessions. Otherwise, follow-up testing is charged separately unless confirmed in writing.
