Core semen assessment

Semen Analysis

Assesses sperm count, movement and shape, alongside other semen characteristics.

A common starting point for male fertility investigations. Standard semen analysis does not include a sperm DNA fragmentation measurement unless specifically added.

Visit the service page for current testing and appointment options.

Doctor follow-up is available. Ask MDC to arrange a discussion of your results and appropriate next steps. Confirm consultation fees and what is included before booking.

The MDC difference

A test result should lead to a useful conversation

Our preferred approach

Halosperm/SCD is MDC’s preferred sperm DNA fragmentation method, supported by recommendations from the urologists we work with.

This describes our clinical preference. The appropriate method still depends on the question being investigated.

Focused or combined testing

Choose the dedicated DNA fragmentation test or explore the Male Fertility Profile, which combines semen analysis with Halo sperm DNA testing and photographs.

Follow-up with a doctor

Discuss your report in the context of your medical history, previous investigations and fertility plans. Ask about follow-up when arranging your test.

Understanding the methods

Halosperm/SCD, SCSA and COMET: what is different?

These laboratory methods assess sperm DNA in different ways. The visual guide below explains the techniques; it is not an accuracy ranking or a prediction of pregnancy.

Method explained
Fluorescence · Flow cytometry

SCSA

The sperm chromatin structure assay uses fluorescent staining and flow cytometry to assess susceptibility to DNA denaturation.

It is an indirect method and is widely studied.

Method explained
DNA migration · Electrophoresis

COMET

Uses electrophoresis to assess DNA migration from individual sperm cells, producing a comet-like pattern.

It directly assesses DNA damage; the protocol affects which types of damage are detected.

Schematic illustrations only, not laboratory results. Methods, reporting measures and thresholds differ: percentages from different assays are not interchangeable.

Which method should I choose? Ask your clinician which assay answers your clinical question, particularly if an IVF clinic has requested a specific method. No single result reliably predicts whether fertility treatment will succeed.

Understanding value

What should you compare when checking the price?

The exact test

Confirm which DNA fragmentation method is used and whether the quote is for DNA testing alone or a combined semen and DNA profile.

The full package

MDC’s £545 Male Fertility Profile lists semen analysis, Halo sperm DNA fragmentation testing and sperm photographs. Check the current service page before booking.

The follow-up

Ask about the reporting time, how you receive the result, and the cost of a doctor consultation. These details help you understand the full cost.

Other MDC investigations

Further testing, guided by your clinical needs

Additional investigations should answer a specific question arising from your symptoms, history or existing results. You do not need every test.

Male Hormone Profile

Explore MDC’s hormone testing options and ask a clinician whether hormonal assessment is relevant to your situation.

Blood Tests

Browse MDC’s blood tests. A clinician can help select investigations relevant to your wider health.

Sexual Health Testing

Your questions answered

Sperm DNA testing FAQs

Where can I find the actual MDC DNA fragmentation test?

Visit the dedicated MDC DNA Fragmentation Test page . For combined testing, explore the Male Fertility Profile .

Does a normal semen analysis rule out sperm DNA damage?

No. Standard semen analysis and DNA fragmentation testing measure different aspects of sperm health. Your clinician can advise whether additional testing would be useful.

Who might benefit from discussing DNA fragmentation testing?

It may be considered in selected situations, including unexplained infertility, recurrent pregnancy loss or unsuccessful assisted reproduction. It is not automatically needed by everyone starting fertility investigations.

Why does MDC offer Halosperm?

Halosperm/SCD is MDC’s preferred approach, supported by the recommendations of the urologists we work with. If your treating fertility team requests another assay, discuss that requirement before booking.

Can a doctor help me understand my result?

Yes. Doctor follow-up is available through MDC. Ask about arranging a consultation and confirm the fee and package inclusions when booking.

How should I prepare for my sample?

Follow the instructions for your specific booked test, including the required abstinence period, collection container and sample delivery arrangements. Contact MDC if you are unsure rather than using instructions for a different test.

Does a high result mean pregnancy is impossible?

No. Results need interpretation alongside the assay, laboratory reference range and the wider fertility assessment. Testing itself is not treatment and cannot guarantee a pregnancy.
