Your questions, answered
Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can book private semen analysis directly with MDC. If another clinic requested the test, check its reporting requirements first.
What if I ejaculated yesterday?
Contact MDC before booking. Its published instructions specify avoiding ejaculation for 2–5 days before collection. A later appointment may be more appropriate.
Where do I provide my sample?
MDC offers a private collection room and on-site analysis. Follow the collection instructions provided for your appointment.
What does the test measure?
Semen analysis assesses sperm quantity, movement and shape, alongside characteristics of the semen sample. These findings help guide a fertility assessment.
Can one test prove I am fertile?
No. A semen analysis cannot guarantee pregnancy or diagnose infertility on its own. Results need to be considered alongside your history and, where relevant, your partner’s assessment.
What if my result is abnormal?
An abnormal result does not necessarily mean you cannot conceive. A clinician may recommend a repeat sample or further investigations, depending on the findings.
Before your appointment
Your preparation checklist
- Follow the abstinence instructions above and those supplied with your booking.
- Tell the team about recent fever, illness, medication and previous fertility results.
- Bring any request letter or instructions from your treating clinic.
- Ask whether a results consultation is included or booked separately.
Providing your sample
Use the container supplied by the laboratory. Avoid lubricants unless specifically approved, and tell staff if collection is incomplete or any sample is spilled.
If you would prefer to collect at home, agree this with MDC beforehand. Transport timing, temperature and container suitability matter. Do not bring an unarranged sample.
Testing after a vasectomy? Tell the team before booking. Post-vasectomy clearance requires the appropriate investigation and collection instructions.

West and north-west London

Do I need further fertility testing?
Your history and initial results should guide whether more tests would be useful. Additional investigations are not necessary for everyone.
Sperm DNA fragmentation
This is a separate investigation of sperm DNA damage. It is not included in routine semen analysis. Ask a clinician whether the result would change the advice or treatment offered to you.
Discuss your results
Ask about clinical review if you have a previous abnormal result, ongoing difficulty conceiving or questions about your report.
NHS advice is to seek assessment after a year of trying to conceive, or after six months if your partner is 36 or older. Seek advice sooner if there are known fertility concerns.
