What is a PSA test?

A PSA blood test measures prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in your blood. PSA is a protein made by prostate cells.

A raised PSA can happen for several reasons. It does not automatically mean cancer.

What does a PSA blood test check for?

A PSA test can help your clinician assess prostate health. It may be used when you have symptoms, or for risk-based checks.

PSA can rise with:

  • An enlarged prostate (benign)
  • Prostate inflammation (prostatitis)
  • A urine infection
  • Prostate cancer (in some cases)

Who should consider checking PSA?

You may want a PSA screen test if you:

  • Are 50+ and want a prostate health baseline.
  • Have a family history of prostate cancer.
  • Are of a higher-risk background, or were advised to test.
  • Have symptoms like weak flow, frequency, or night urination.

If you are unsure, we can guide you. A PSA test is a starting point, not the final answer.

What not to do before a PSA blood test

For 48 hours before your PSA test, please observe the following to ensure accuracy:

  • Avoid Ejaculation
  • No Anal sex or prostate stimulation
  • Vigorous exercise that leaves you breathless.
  • Avoid Cycling or similar intense activity.

Note: You can eat and drink as normal. Please inform our team if you have recently had a prostate biopsy or urology procedure, a urine infection, or a fever.

PSA levels by age: what is “dangerous”?

People often ask: “What is a dangerous PSA level by age?”

The truth is, there is no single number that fits everyone. PSA varies with age and prostate size, and many rises are entirely benign.

What matters is the full picture:

  • Your age and symptoms.
  • Your PSA trend over time.
  • Recent sex, cycling, or infection.
  • Whether a repeat test is needed.

If PSA is raised, next steps may include:

  • Repeat PSA after avoiding triggers.
  • Urine testing if infection is suspected.
  • Clinical assessment and referral when appropriate.

No. PSA can be raised for non-cancer reasons, including enlargement, inflammation, or infection. A PSA test is a useful starting point, but it is not a cancer diagnosis.

Tip: A repeat PSA and clinical context often clarifies the result.
