Transferrin Saturation

Transferrin saturation measures the percentage of transferrin proteins that are currently bound to iron in
the bloodstream. Because transferrin is responsible for transporting iron throughout the body, this test
provides insight into how much of the available iron‑transport capacity is being used.

Transferrin saturation is usually calculated using serum iron and total iron binding capacity measurements
and forms an important component of an iron profile used to evaluate iron balance.

Clinical Significance

Low transferrin saturation levels may indicate iron deficiency, a condition in which the body does not have
enough iron to produce adequate haemoglobin. This can lead to symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, and reduced
exercise tolerance.

Conversely, elevated transferrin saturation levels may suggest iron overload conditions such as hereditary
haemochromatosis. In these conditions excess iron may accumulate in tissues and organs, potentially causing
damage if left untreated.

Who Might Benefit From This Test?

Individuals experiencing persistent fatigue, suspected anaemia, or abnormal iron levels may benefit from
transferrin saturation testing. The test is commonly performed when clinicians investigate iron deficiency,
chronic inflammatory conditions, or genetic disorders affecting iron metabolism.

Sample Collection

A blood sample is collected by a trained healthcare professional using standard phlebotomy procedures.
The test is quick and minimally invasive and is usually completed within a few minutes. The sample is placed into a
specialised collection tube and transported to the laboratory where advanced analytical equipment is used
to measure the relevant biochemical markers. Proper sample handling and laboratory processing ensure accurate and
reliable results for clinical interpretation.

Understanding Your Results

Results are evaluated together with other iron markers including ferritin, transferrin, and serum iron.
Interpreting these markers together provides a clearer understanding of overall iron status and helps guide
appropriate treatment or monitoring.
