HTLV 1 & 2 Antibodies (Human T‑Lymphotropic Virus Type I & II)
The HTLV 1 & 2 Antibodies blood test is used to detect exposure to Human T‑Lymphotropic Virus types I and II. These viruses are retroviruses that can infect T‑lymphocytes and are transmitted through blood contact, sexual contact, or from mother to child. Most individuals infected with HTLV do not develop symptoms; however, in a small proportion of cases, the virus may be associated with neurological conditions or certain blood disorders. This test detects antibodies produced by the immune system in response to HTLV infection and is commonly used for screening, blood donation assessment, or investigation of unexplained neurological or haematological findings. Results are interpreted alongside clinical history and, if positive, may be followed by confirmatory testing.
