If one partner tests positive and the other does not, there are several possible explanations that have nothing to do with infidelity. The negative partner may still be within the window period for that infection and need a repeat test. Some infections transmit less efficiently than others, so one exposure does not guarantee transmission. And some infections, such as herpes, can be carried asymptomatically for years before being diagnosed.

At MDC, each partner is advised individually. A clinician will explain your result in the context of your specific situation, including whether a follow-up test is needed, what treatment involves, and how to approach the conversation with your partner if you choose to. We do not contact your partner on your behalf without your consent.

For infections where partner treatment is necessary to prevent reinfection (chlamydia and gonorrhoea in particular), your clinician will advise on how to ensure both partners are treated even if only one tests positive.

No. You can book separately and attend on different days if that is more convenient. The only advantage of attending on the same day is that you both receive results at roughly the same time, which some couples find easier. There is no clinical requirement to be tested simultaneously.

For the clinical consultation and sample collection, each partner is seen individually. You are welcome to wait together in reception. If you would like your partner present during your consultation, let the clinical team know when you arrive and they will accommodate this where possible.

Yes, NHS sexual health clinics offer free testing to both partners. The practical differences with private testing at MDC are appointment availability, result speed, and privacy. NHS results can take 5 to 10 working days; MDC returns results within 24 to 42 hours. NHS testing creates a record within the NHS system; MDC testing does not appear on your GP or NHS record.

Each partner's panel can be customised based on their individual history, exposure type, and concerns. You are not required to have the same tests as your partner. Our clinical team advises each person individually during their consultation on which tests are most appropriate for their situation.
