What is painful Peyronie’s disease?

Peyronie’s disease involves scar tissue, called a plaque, in the tissue surrounding the erectile chambers. This can make the penis bend or change shape during an erection. Symptoms may include pain, a firm area beneath the skin, shortening, narrowing or erection difficulties.

A slight lifelong curve can be normal. A new curve, painful erections or a new lump should be assessed. Not every cause of penile pain is Peyronie’s.

Question 01

Why can erections hurt?

Pain is common while the condition is developing. The affected tissue may be tender and less able to stretch comfortably during an erection.

Question 02

Does pain mean the curve will worsen?

Not necessarily. Symptoms vary. Tracking pain, shape and sexual function helps your specialist assess changes over time.

Question 03

Will the pain settle?

It often improves as the condition stabilises, but a curve or narrowing may remain. Reduced pain does not necessarily mean the plaque or deformity has resolved.

Question 04

Should I wait before asking for help?

You can seek advice now, especially if sex is painful, the shape is changing or the symptoms affect your confidence. Assessment does not mean you must start treatment.

Shockwave therapy for painful Peyronie’s disease

Our urology team has seen encouraging responses, and patients have told us they are happy with their shockwave treatment at MDC. Pain management is an important part of these discussions, alongside comfort, confidence and sexual wellbeing.

This reflects our team’s clinical experience and patient feedback, rather than a guarantee of the same result for everyone. Your urologist will explain what treatment is aiming to achieve and review your response.

Shockwave may be considered for pain during the active phase of Peyronie’s disease. Evidence for straightening the penis or reducing plaque is not established; pain relief and changes in curvature are assessed separately.

At MDC, treatment starts with an assessment and an individual plan, including agreed follow-up and aftercare.

Our linked service page also discusses ED. Peyronie’s pain and ED require their own assessment and treatment goals.

Your care pathway: from first enquiry to review

At MDC, we help connect your consultation, recommended investigations and follow-up, so you understand the next step.

  1. Contact MDC

WhatsApp 07495 970109 or call 020 7724 0540. Our staff can arrange an appointment with Mr Giulio Garaffa, Consultant Urological Surgeon, and confirm fees and location.

  2. Establish what is causing the symptoms

Your urologist will discuss pain, changes in shape, erections and the impact on your life, then examine you. Further tests or imaging are arranged only where useful.

  3. Agree an individual plan

Your specialist may discuss observation, suitable pain relief, treatment for erection difficulties or other options. Agree the goal, likely benefits, limitations, costs and review point before treatment starts.

  4. Review progress

Follow-up should consider pain, sexual function, changes in shape and treatment effects. If the plan is not helping, your specialist can reassess it and discuss alternatives or onward referral.

Follow-up and aftercare are part of the plan

MDC supports a coordinated care pathway, including specialist consultation, treatment reviews and aftercare arrangements. Before treatment, ask the team to confirm:

  • When your next review is due and who will assess your progress.
  • What you should expect after treatment and which changes need medical advice.
  • Any guidance about sex, activity or using prescribed devices.
  • Who to contact between appointments and what to do outside clinic hours.
  • Which follow-up appointments are included in your fees.

For routine booking and follow-up enquiries, WhatsApp MDC on 07495 970109 . Clinical concerns can be directed to the appropriate clinician. WhatsApp is not an emergency service.

What other options might be discussed?

Treatment depends on the stage of the condition and what bothers you most. Options may include suitable pain medicines, treatment for associated ED, specialist-guided traction or selected injection treatments. Surgery is generally considered once the condition is stable and deformity significantly affects sexual function.

Availability and suitability differ. Procedures requiring another provider will need a separate referral and arrangements.
