What is penile rehabilitation after prostatectomy?
Penile rehabilitation means planned support for erectile and sexual function after prostate removal. It may include medicines, a vacuum erection device, injections or other specialist-led treatment, alongside advice and support for you and your partner.
Erection changes are common after surgery. Recovery depends on factors including your erections before treatment, age, general health and whether the nerves involved in erections could be preserved. Even after nerve-sparing surgery, recovery can take time and may be incomplete.
You can ask for help before surgery or during recovery. Your surgical team should guide when treatment and sexual activity can safely begin.

Where does shockwave therapy fit?
MDC offers focused shockwave therapy for selected men with erectile dysfunction. After prostatectomy, it may be discussed as an additional option within an individual rehabilitation plan.
Research has reported possible improvements in early erectile recovery, but the evidence after prostatectomy remains limited. It is not an established routine rehabilitation treatment for everyone, and it cannot be promised to restore damaged nerves or natural erections.
Your clinician should distinguish surgery-related nerve injury from blood-flow-related erection problems, explain the uncertainty and compare shockwave with established ED treatments.
If your urologist has already recommended shockwave, tell our team. Treatment booking remains subject to review of your recovery, medical history and recommended plan.
Your questions, answered clearly
When should I start?
Discuss rehabilitation early, but do not start a device or treatment simply because a fixed number of weeks has passed. Healing, complications and your surgeon’s advice determine safe timing.
Will my erections return?
Some men recover useful erections; others need ongoing treatment. Recovery may take months or longer. No clinic can guarantee a return to your erections before surgery.
Can I continue my prescribed medicines?
Do not stop or change prescribed treatment without advice. Your clinician can explain whether medicines or a vacuum device should remain part of your plan if shockwave is considered.
Do I need to see a urologist first?
A clinical suitability review is needed before shockwave. If you already have a specialist plan, MDC can review it. If further advice is needed, our staff can help arrange a consultation.

Agree treatment goals
If shockwave is appropriate, agree the proposed course, likely benefits, uncertainties, risks and costs. Other treatments may be used alongside it or recommended instead.
Follow up and reassess
Review erection quality, comfort, sexual confidence and treatment effects. Agree when to reassess or change the plan if improvement is limited.
Need specialist advice? Book through MDC.
Our staff can help arrange a consultation with Mr Giulio Garaffa, Consultant Urological Surgeon. WhatsApp MDC on 07495 970109 or call 020 7724 0540 for booking support.
A consultation can address persistent ED, changes in penile shape, discomfort or uncertainty about your current rehabilitation plan. Appointment location, availability and fees will be confirmed when booking.
Rehabilitation and aftercare beyond one treatment
A tailored plan may include prescribed ED medication, a medically recommended vacuum device, injection treatment or a penile implant discussion when other options are unsuitable or ineffective. Psychosexual support can also help with confidence and intimacy.
Before starting treatment, confirm your review date, aftercare instructions, contact arrangements and which follow-up appointments are included in the fees.
Continue your cancer follow-up and PSA monitoring with your treating team. Sexual rehabilitation complements that care; it does not replace it.
