The Leishmania Antibodies blood test detects antibodies produced in response to infection with Leishmania parasites. Leishmaniasis is a parasitic disease transmitted by the bite of infected sandflies and is more common in parts of Southern Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and South America.

Infection can present in different forms, ranging from skin ulcers (cutaneous leishmaniasis) to involvement of internal organs such as the liver and spleen (visceral leishmaniasis). Symptoms may develop weeks or months after exposure.

This test identifies whether the immune system has been exposed to Leishmania parasites. It is commonly used when symptoms persist after travel to endemic areas or when unexplained fever, weight loss, or organ enlargement is present.

Antibody testing is often used alongside other investigations, as antibody levels may remain detectable even after past infection.

Results are interpreted in the context of travel history, symptoms, and additional laboratory findings.
