The Lipase blood test measures the level of lipase, an enzyme produced mainly by the pancreas. Lipase plays a vital role in digestion by helping break down dietary fats into fatty acids that can be absorbed by the body.

Under normal circumstances, only small amounts of lipase are present in the bloodstream. When the pancreas becomes inflamed or injured, lipase levels can rise significantly, making this test particularly useful in the assessment of pancreatic health.

Elevated lipase levels are most commonly associated with acute pancreatitis, a condition characterised by sudden inflammation of the pancreas that may cause severe abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and fever. Chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic obstruction, and certain gallbladder conditions may also affect lipase levels.

The Lipase test is often requested when someone presents with upper abdominal pain or digestive symptoms suggestive of pancreatic involvement. It is frequently used alongside amylase and imaging studies to support diagnosis and monitor disease severity.

Because lipase levels can rise quickly and remain elevated for longer than amylase, this test is considered particularly sensitive for detecting pancreatic inflammation. Results are always interpreted in the context of symptoms, medical history, and other investigations.
