The Manganese blood test measures the level of manganese, an essential trace element required for normal metabolism, bone formation, antioxidant defence, and nervous system function.

Manganese plays a role in enzyme activation and supports the metabolism of carbohydrates, amino acids, and cholesterol. Although required only in small amounts, both deficiency and excess can cause health problems.

Low manganese levels are uncommon but may be associated with poor dietary intake or malabsorption. High levels are more concerning and may occur due to occupational exposure, environmental contamination, or impaired liver function.

Excess manganese can affect the nervous system, potentially causing symptoms such as tremor, coordination problems, and cognitive changes.
