Marylebone Diagnostic Centre

Accessibility & Disability Support Policy

1. Introduction

Marylebone Diagnostic Centre (MDC) is committed to providing safe, respectful and accessible healthcare services to all patients, including those with disabilities or additional support needs.

This policy outlines how MDC ensures reasonable adjustments, safe access, and equal treatment in accordance with the Equality Act 2010 and CQC Fundamental Standards. As a private clinic operating within a central London building, certain limitations may exist; however, MDC will always take all reasonable steps to accommodate patient needs and ensure safe access.

2. Purpose

This policy ensures that:

  • Patients with disabilities can access services safely and comfortably
  • Staff understand their responsibilities under the Equality Act
  • Reasonable adjustments are made wherever possible
  • Patients receive appropriate assistance during their visit
  • Accessibility considerations are included in MDC’s service planning

3. Commitment to Equity and Non-Discrimination

MDC provides care without discrimination on the basis of:

  • Physical or sensory disability
  • Chronic health conditions
  • Mental health needs
  • Neurodiversity
  • Language barriers
  • Learning disabilities
  • Age

Every patient has the right to dignified, respectful and person-centred care.

4. Reasonable Adjustments at MDC

MDC offers practical support to make appointments accessible, including:

  • Assistance entering and exiting the building
  • Support moving between clinical rooms
  • Extended appointment times where needed
  • Quiet waiting areas when available
  • Alternative communication methods (written, verbal, simplified information)
  • Allowing a carer, interpreter or advocate to attend
  • Chaperones for intimate examinations
  • Adjusted positioning for blood tests and clinical procedures
  • Providing results in accessible formats upon request

5. Advance Notice to Ensure Prepared Access

Due to the structure of the building and the nature of certain diagnostic rooms, we ask that patients requiring accessibility support contact us before their appointment.

This allows MDC staff to:

  • Prepare accessible entry and pathway arrangements
  • Organise staff assistance for mobility support
  • Adjust room layout or seating
  • Allocate appropriate time and clinical space
  • Ensure safe access for wheelchair users or patients with reduced mobility

We kindly request that patients call ahead so we can prepare the necessary adjustments to support their visit.

6. Communication Support

MDC will provide:

  • Clear, easy-to-understand explanations
  • Written information where helpful
  • Slower-paced or extended consultations when required
  • Permission for carers or loved ones to assist communication
  • Use of email and written summaries for patients with auditory difficulties

If a patient needs information in an alternative format (large print, simplified text, etc.), MDC will accommodate where reasonably possible.

7. Service Animals

Registered assistance dogs are welcome at MDC.

Staff will ensure a safe, respectful, and calm environment for the animal and its handler.

8. Clinical Considerations for Disability Support

Staff must consider accessibility when:

  • Performing blood tests
  • Conducting semen analysis or sensitive procedures
  • Positioning patients for scans or examinations
  • Providing IV therapy
  • Escorting patients with mobility needs
  • Managing patients at risk of falls

Patient dignity must always be prioritised.

9. Staff Responsibilities

All staff must:

  • Treat every patient with respect and sensitivity
  • Provide reasonable adjustments without delay
  • Follow manual handling and mobility support training
  • Escalate accessibility concerns to the manager or Clinical Director
  • Never make assumptions about a patient’s abilities or limitations

Failure to provide equitable care may result in disciplinary action.

10. Building Limitations

As a private clinic operating in a central London property, certain physical limitations may exist.

Where specific accessibility adjustments cannot be structurally achieved, MDC will:

  • Offer staff-assisted access
  • Provide alternative appointment options
  • Adjust clinical procedures to accommodate patient needs
  • Clearly communicate any limitations in advance
  • Prioritise dignity, safety and comfort at all times

Patients are encouraged to call in advance so we can prepare effectively.

11. Feedback and Improvements

MDC welcomes feedback from patients with disabilities.

Any suggestions for improving accessibility will be reviewed by management and the Clinical Governance Committee.

12. Policy Review

This policy is reviewed annually and updated as services expand or regulations change.
